David H. Chestnut, M.D., Section on the History of Anesthesia
UAB Anesthesiology Department

Status Report

June 2002-June 2006

A.J. Wright, M.L.S., Director

29 August 2006

Last year Dr. Doris Cope published an article entitled “History as a Subspecialty of Anesthesiology.”  She outlines many organizational efforts related to anesthesia history and concludes, “In anesthesiology, which was the first medical specialty to be born in the United States, those with an eye for past tradition are alive and well.” (1)  The Anesthesiology Department at the University of Alabama School of Medicine is making a significant contribution to that “subspecialty.”

In June 2002 the department created a Section on the History of Anesthesia within its Education Division. In June 2005 the Section was formally named the DAVID HILL CHESTNUT, M.D. SECTION ON THE HISTORY OF ANESTHESIA  in honor of the Chairman who enthusiastically supported its creation. What follows is a progress report on the Section’s activities during its first four years.

In the June 2002 Section proposal, the following goals were listed:

1. Acquaint the medical students, anesthesiology residents, fellows, and faculty at UAB as well as the anesthesiologists practicing in the city and state, with the historical past, and the contributions of anesthesiology to the legacy of modern medicine.

2. Encourage and actively perform research in the history of anesthesia by utilizing the academic environment at UAB, UA Tuscaloosa, and the Reynolds Collection of the UAB Lister Hill Library.

3. Familiarize the academic establishments, medical community and lay public with the progression of events that led to the establishment and the broadening of modern anesthetic practices.

4. Expand our Departmental Library as a source of materials for anesthesia history in the various subspecialty areas.

5. Secure funding for the many HOA projects mentioned above.

6. Develop an organizational structure.

As the appendices of this report demonstrate, progress toward meeting these goals has been steady and exciting. Six departmental faculty are now affiliated with the Section. Several residents have participated in history projects and presented their results at local, national and international forums. The Section also sponsors an annual award to recognize the best of these resident efforts. Numerous meeting presentations and publications  have been completed by Section faculty.  Each year the department hosts a Visiting Professor in the History of Anesthesia. The Section has co-sponsored local exhibits, lectures and meetings with UAB’s Reynolds Historical Library and the Anesthesia History Association.

The achievements have been numerous, but I am confident they are only the beginning!

"Patent Medicine Advertising Cards."

In 2004 the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences acquired a large collection of these cards, which were used to advertise trademarked nostrums in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This exhibit offers a selection of the cards featuring beautiful artwork printed by color lithography and touting their claims as a "universal pain killer" and cures for many other ailments. Among the products included are the famous Carter's Liver Pills and Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. The exhibit offers a glimpse of what drug marketing was like in the United States before the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act. These reproductions have been loaned to us by the Museum and its curator Steafnie T. Rookis. The Museum is located on the third floor of the Lister Hill Library; hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. More information is at http://www.uab.edu/historical/museum.htm

DR. OLIVER WENDALL HOLMES, SR., EXHIBIT ON JT9

In November 1846, Dr. Holmes wrote a letter to William T.G. Morton, who had demonstrated successful ether anesthesia for surgery the previous month at the Massachusetts General Hospital. In that letter Holmes suggested the word "anaesthesia" to describe the condition Morton had created in his patient. That word had been used the ancient Greeks to suggest "without sensation," but Holmes was the first to couple its use with gas inhalation to prevent pain during surgery. Holmes (1809-1894) was a remarkable nineteenth-century physician, poet, and novelist who in 1843 published a landmark paper suggesting that puerperal fever was contagious and often caused by contact with health care workers. One of our faculty, Dr. Maurice Albin, has provided some materials associated with Dr. Holmes, and along with biographical material and the text of his letter to Morton, they are on exhibit in the JT9 display case across the hall from Ms. Pat Thompson's office.
