REORGANIZATION OF THE AANA LIBRARY

The AANA Board of Directors of 1942-1943 approved a plan to develop a lending library to AANA members and nurse anesthesia schools. In the 1940s very few books on anesthesia were in print, therefore, many anesthetists borrowed books from libraries.

In 1991, the first full-time AANA librarian was hired to organize and catalog the books which had been collected by various departments. In 1998, the Library merged with the Archives Department to form an information clearinghouse for nurse anesthetists. The Library’s collection of anesthesia materials offers nurse anesthetists and AANA staff a wealth of information to aid the anesthesia profession.

Mission Statement of the AANA Library

The fundamental purpose of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Library is to provide the dissemination of anesthesia and health sciences information to nurse anesthetists, AANA staff, health sciences investigators, educators, and students in order to advance the knowledge of anesthesia.

Goals of the AANA Library

1) To facilitate the knowledge of anesthesia by providing information and database services.

2) To encourage the use of nurse anesthesia materials such as books, serials, dissertations, thesis.

3) To develop and empower nurse anesthetists and AANA staff with health sciences information.

AANA Library Access Policy

The Library provides informational services that will assist the operation of the AANA in addition to serving research by making available its collections to AANA members, office staff, and approved researchers.

Researchers (non-AANA members) from outside the AANA Executive Office must apply for and receive authorization to use any materials in the Library. This includes acquiring permission from the AANA Executive Director through the Archivist-Librarian by completing an AANA Archives-Library Research Application Form. If approved, researchers must sign the AANA Archives-Library Conditions to Access Form and adhere to the AANA Archives-Library Access Policy. Approved researchers may then have access to the Library’s holdings. They also have the right to obtain copies of a reasonable amount of material for study.

AANA Library Collections

The Library’s collections are cataloged in the Library’s database GLAS which is made by EOS International. The data will be made available to appropriate AANA staff through the GLAS GoPAC. AANA members will have access to GLAS via the World Wide Web in the near future.

The AANA Library’s holdings consist of the four collections:

1) Serial Collection - Contains the Federal Register, journals, newsletters, popular magazines, etc.

2) Reference Collection - Contains dictionaries, association directories, encyclopedia’s of associations, phone books, etc.

3) Book Collection - Nursing & anesthesia text books, etc.

4) Abstract, Thesis, & Dissertation Collection - Collected from CRNAs and nurse anesthesia schools.

AANA Library Services

The Library is now located on the 4th floor of the AANA Executive Office.

Its hours are from 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday.

Five types of reference service are available from the Library:

1) Fixed term loans from the collections.

2) Photocopies of materials from the collections.
