ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

The First International Symposium on Modern Anesthesia History was held in Rotterdam in 1982. At that meeting, several members of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) discussed the possible organization of an anesthesia history society in the United States. In August of that year, Dr. Selma Calmes sent a questionnaire to 79 anesthesiologists, canvassing their interest in such a group. Of these, 51 responded.

On October 25, 1982, at ASA’s Annual Meeting, a special meeting was held to form such a group. 47 persons attended the organizational meeting. The meeting was opened by Dr. Garth Huston, then Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM). Various names for the new group were discussed at that meeting, but none was chosen. By January 1983 it was named the "Anesthesia History Association" (AHA). Dr. Selma Calmes and Dr. Roderick Calverley are credited with being the co-founders of the AHA.

The AHA’s "Inaugural Meeting" was held on October 9, 1983. This, like the organizational meeting and all subsequent annual meetings of the AHA, was part of the program of the ASA’s Annual Meeting. Having begun under the aegis of the ASA, there was at first some confusion regarding the status of the AHA. Early monetary donations to support the new Association were sent to both ASA and WLM. However, the AHA soon asserted its independence.

The first issue of the "Anesthesia History Association Newsletter" was published in December, 1982. It has remained in continuous publication, with an average of four issues per year (see the following list.) In 1995, the WLM became co-publisher of the newsletter, a relationship that continues to the present. With the July, 1995 issue, the name of the newsletter was changed to the "Bulletin of Anesthesia History". In 1996, a cumulated index to the AHA Newsletter was published. Creation of the index was a joint project of the AHA, WLM, and ASA.

The AHA was a principal sponsor of the Third International Symposium on the History of Anesthesia. The meeting was held in Atlanta, Georgia, March 27—31, 1992. The theme of the symposium was the Crawford W. Long Sesquicentennial (the 150th anniversary of Dr. Long’s use of ether vapor to produce surgical anesthesia.) The AHA also co-sponsored the Bicentenary Meeting to Mark Davy’s Researches into Nitrous Oxide, held in Bristol, England, May 13-15, 1999.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Series

Miscellaneous records: This material is slim, and has been organized chronologically.

Newsletter: This series consists of the manuscript of the newsletter index that was published in 1996, and miscellaneous issues from 1982 through 1995.

TISHA: The Third International Symposium on the History of Anesthesia (TISHA) is well documented in this collection. The proceedings of this Symposium were published by WLM in 1992.

Other Symposia: The collection also contains records relating to the first two International Symposia on the History of Anaesthesia, and to the Bicentenary Meeting celebrating Humphrey Davy’s research into nitrous oxide.

Lacunae

The Wood Library Museum’s collection of AHA records was compiled from various sources, including certain gifts from the AHA. This collection contains very few examples of administrative or fiscal records, and sporadic records of regular activities such as production of the newsletter, the world-wide web site, meetings and other events.
