| Title: |
Fallacies and Useful Truths: An Overview of History and Science
for the Anesthesiologist...or...Lust, Torture and Depravity: The
Anatomy of Derangement.
|
| Introduction: |
Kathryn E. McGoldrick, M.D. and Susan A. Vassallo, M.D. |
The Lewis H. Wright Memorial Lecture
of the Wood Library-Museum honors a distinguished Pioneer in American
Anesthesiology who gave himself tirelessly to dignify and accredit the
discipline of anesthesiology as a clinical science and medical specialty.
No part of the country was too far or too remote for him to reach with his
advice and support. Because he had the wisdom to envision the value of the
use of curare in anesthesia, he made his most significant contribution to
anesthesiology in 1940 when he first suggested and later arranged for the
clinical trials of this remarkable drug which has revolutionized the practice of
anesthesiology for all time. In 1955, the American Society of
Anesthesiologists recognized his contributions by according him their highest
honor, the Distinguished Service Award. This Lectureship will serve to
remind us now, and in the years to come, of his honored place in the specialty
of Anesthesiology.
An ASA Newsletter article about this lecture is here.
