A1182 Contributions to Regional Infiltration Anesthesia by Alberto Gutierrez
   J. Antonio Aldrete, M.D., M.S., Osvaldo A. Auad, M.D., Vicente T. Gutierrez, M.D., A. J. Wright, M.L.S.
Alberto Gutierrez known for the “Hanging Drop” method in epidural anesthesia, made contributions to regional anesthesia, publishing techniques for eight different operations, the addition of vasopressin to novocaine and his own device to rapidly infiltrate large volumes of local anesthesia, under sterile conditions.
A1183 Dr. Henry Beecher Blazed a Trail in Patients' Safety
   Ike Eriator, M.D., M.P.H., Brad Ramsey, M.D., Wanda Keahey, Pharm.D., M.P.H.
A stellar example as an advocate for patient's safety, Dr. Henry K. Beecher (1904 – 1976), not only presented us with the placebo effect, he was instrumental in procuring the rights and privileges that human subjects are guaranteed in clinical investigations.
A1184 Anesthesiology Transforms an Ancient Painful Ritualistic Technique into a Surgical Procedure
Michael C. Lewis, M.D., Christopher Gallagher, M.D., Roger Marks, M.D., Gilbert Chidiac, M.D., David Birnbach, M.D.
Circumcision has been performed without any anesthesia for more than a thousand years and the practice still continues in many parts of the world. Contemporary anesthetic techniques have possibly made this ancient procedure more acceptable in a modern social and surgical environment.
A1185 The Role of World War II Portable Surgical Hospitals in the Development of Anesthesiology as a Physician Specialty in the United States
   David B. Waisel, M.D.
This study examines the adequacy of anesthesia care in the portable surgical hospitals in the North Africa Theater of Operations (NATO). Data do not support the putative argument that physician-anesthetists from the NATO portable surgical hospitals were inadequate.
A1186 Historical Firsts: The Total Isolation, Transplantation and Hypothermic Preservation of the Mammalian Brain
   Maurice S. Albin, M.D., M.Sc., Robert J. White, M.D., Ph.D., Javier Verdura, M.D.
On Jan 17, 1962, for the first time, the mammalian brain (monkey) demonstrated sustained viability after total isolation and perfusion by a donor monkey. On June 3, 1964, the canine brain was isolated and then transplanted into the neck of a recipient canine showing a high level of sustained EEG activity.
A1187 Characteristics of an Early Anesthesia Practice: Dr. Mary Botsford of San Francisco, 1916-1937
   Selma H. Calmes, M.D.
Papers published from 1916-1937 by a prominent physician anesthetist, her trainees and her surgeons were analyzed, and anesthesia practice during that time was documented. N 2 O-O 2 , with narcotic, local anesthesia and ether for relaxation was the most common technique. Regional anesthesia was not done by the anesthetists.
A1188 Norman R. James, England's Foremost Exponent of Regional Analgesia- 1943
   Adolph H. Giesecke, M.D.
Dr. Norman James was an innovative academician recognized in England where he served in the London Emergency Medical Service in WW II, in Australia where he was first Director of Anaesthesia at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and in Dallas TX where he was noted for excellence in teaching.
A1189 Anesthesia and Cesarean Section. Progress in Surgery Driven by Developments in Anesthesia
Michael C. Lewis, M.D., Jayanthie Ranasinghe, M.D., Christopher Gallagher, M.D., David Birnbach, M.D.
Cesarean section is an ancient procedure. Because of high maternal and fetal mortality its use was limited. The advent of dependable safe anesthesia has led to the transformation of an inherently painful dangerous technique for both mother and fetus into a safe increasingly popular procedure.
A1190 Dr. Harold Griffith and the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists
   Naosuke Sugai, M.D., Ph.D., Shigemasa Ikeda, M.D.
In 1950's Dr. Harold Griffith helped the Japanese Society of Anestheiologists join the World Federation of Anaesthesiologists which he had founded, triggered by a letter written by Dr. Michinosuke Amano of Keio University, Tokyo.
A1191 Ansel Marion Caine, MD
Brett Winthrop, M.D., David Broussard, M.D.
Dr. Ansel Marion Caine rose to national prominence as a founding father of organized anesthesia in the early 20th century. His contributions to our specialty in the areas of leadership, education, and invention are numerous yet his name is often forgotten in recorded history.
A1192 Why Would the Pope Have a Private Audience with Anesthesiologists?
   David P. Martin, M.D., Ph.D., James J. Delaney, Ph.D., Douglas R. Bacon, M.D.
Almost fifty years ago, European anesthesiologists sought guidance with ethical problems concerning the relatively young fields of pain medicine and critical care. In 1957, on two separate occasions, His Holiness Pius XII met with groups of anesthesiologists in private audiences. The ethical principles articulated then are still relevant today.
A1193 A World War II Homemade Anesthesia Machine
   David B. Waisel, M.D.
This paper describes how a World War II homemade anesthesia machine was built on a Navy ship.
A1253 Entry of U.S. Women Physicians into Anesthesiology and Surgery:
An Update, 1998-2002
   Selma H. Calmes, M.D.
The entry of women into surgery and its specialties now exceeds entry of women into anesthesiology, a potential manpower issue for anesthesiology. This abstract updates
1997 data presented in 1999 and reveals that, although more women entered A by 2000 than predicted in 1999, more women still enter all surgical specialties.
