Grading of Patients for
Surgical Procedures: Evolution and Controversy |

Nathaniel P. Nonoy, M.D., David B. Waisel, M.D. |

The Physical Status
Classification, a notable early accomplishment of the ASA, was intended to
promote standardization of communication in anesthesia research. It has
ironically evolved into an expression of operative risk, exactly what was not
intended. |

Endotracheal Anaesthesia : The Story behind Noel Gillespie's Monograph |
Mark E. Schroeder, M.D. |
Despite the initial
description of endotracheal intubation
by Vesalius in 1543, its use for anesthesia was not
summarized before Noel Gillespie wrote his monograph, Endotracheal Anesthesia published in 1941. Gillespie's notes and diaries
provide historical insight to the of writing this
classic work. |

Dr. Robert Smith had to
overcome numerous obstacles in his quest to improve and incorporate endotracheal intubation into
the safe administration of pediatric anesthesia in the early 1950's. |

Choice of Anesthetic
Technique for Surgery at the Front during World War I |
Anthony L. Kovac, M.D. |
During WWI, choice of
anesthetic technique involved patient, surgery and anesthesia factors.
Sedation was morphine/atropine IM. Local infiltration was novocain.
Combination chloroform/ether induction was followed by ether. Spinal
anesthesia with stovain was used for operations of
pelvis or legs. |

Iaso and Recovery in Early Greek Medicine |
Cornelia S. Roy, M.A.,
Raymond C. Roy, Ph.D., M.D., Robert A. Strickland, M.D. |
Iaso, the Greek goddess of Recovery, is not mentioned in
the Hippocratic Oath with her sisters, Hygeia (Health)
and Panaceia (Treatments and Cures). This omission
may be the first sign of a division of the labor of medicine between
physicians and nurses. |

Historians have discussed
the impact of theological opposition to the advent of labor analgesia on the
development of anesthesia. We postulate that additional and equal opposition came
from within the medical community. |

Counterfactual History in Anesthesiology:
What If…
Tuesday, October 16, 2007
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Objective: After attending this panel, the learner will understand
the importance of singular events in the history of anesthesiology. By changing one fact, and constructing a
“new” history around it, the listener will understand how current
structures and practices came to anesthesiology, which may influence current
practice patterns.
