Endotracheal Anaesthesia : The Story behind Noel Gillespie's Monograph

Mark E. Schroeder, M.D.

Despite the initial description of endotracheal intubation by Vesalius in 1543, its use for anesthesia was not summarized before Noel Gillespie wrote his monograph, Endotracheal Anesthesia published in 1941. Gillespie's notes and diaries provide historical insight to the of writing this classic work.

Iaso and Recovery in Early Greek Medicine

Cornelia S. Roy, M.A., Raymond C. Roy, Ph.D., M.D., Robert A. Strickland, M.D.

Iaso, the Greek goddess of Recovery, is not mentioned in the Hippocratic Oath with her sisters, Hygeia (Health) and Panaceia (Treatments and Cures). This omission may be the first sign of a division of the labor of medicine between physicians and nurses.

Religious and Cultural Controversies Surrounding the Advent of Anesthesia. Some Myths Debunked

Michael C. Lewis, M.D., Aharon Avramovich, M.D., Jayanthie Ranasinghe, M.D., Donald H. Penning, M.D.

Historians have discussed the impact of theological opposition to the advent of labor analgesia on the development of anesthesia. We postulate that additional and equal opposition came from within the medical community.

Counterfactual History in Anesthesiology:  What If…

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
