Note: I have examined most of the items listed in this column.  Books can be listed in this column more than once as new reviews appear. Older articles are included as I work through a large backlog of materials. Some listings are not directly related to anesthesia, pain or critical care; I interpret those categories very broadly. Some will concern individuals important in the history of the specialty [i.e., Harvey Cushing or William Halsted] who also achieved in other areas or widely-used equipment such as the stethoscope. I also include career profiles of living individuals. Non-English materials are so indicated. Columns for the past several years are available as "Recent Articles on Anesthesia History"   on the Anesthesia History Association WWW page at http://www.anes.uab.edu/anesthesia_history_association.htm  I urge readers to send me any citations, especially those not in English, that I may otherwise miss!
