DR. MANDABACH WINS 2007 CALVERLEY FELLOWSHIP!

Each year the ASA's Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology awards several Paul M. Wood Fellowships so that researchers can come to Park Ridge, Illinois, and use the WLM's fabulous collection of anesthesia history materials. One of those fellowships each year is designated the Rod Calverley Fellowship, which is jointly supported with the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego, in memory of Dr. Calverley who had been a member of that department. Dr. Calverley, a strong advocate of anesthesia history studies and one of the founding members of the Anesthesia History Association, initiated the WLM's fellowship program before his untimely death. This year's winner of the Calverley Fellowship is our own Mark Mandabach, M.D., for his project "The History of Anesthesia in Alabama." This award is a significant honor for both Dr. Mandabach and our department. Dr. Mandabach is the third member of this department to win a Wood Fellowship; J. Antonio Aldrete, M.D., received one in 2006 and A.J. Wright, M.L.S.,  in 1988. However, Dr. Mandabach is our first Calverley Fellow. Congratulations!!

Section faculty member J. Antonio Aldrete, MD, MS, was named one of the 2006-2007 Paul M. Wood Fellows by the Board of Trustees of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology in Park Ridge, Illinois. Dr. Aldrete's research project is "Anesthetic Management of the Wounded during the Mexican-American War from 1846-1848." Congratulations, Dr. Aldrete!!

"In The Beginning There Was Darkness..."

A (very) Personal Memoir of the Early Days of Residency Training

in the Department of Anesthesiology at UAB

Frederick R. Brosch, M.D.

June, 2007

On September 30, 1998, Dr. Brosch retired after 30 years of service to the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the UA Health Services Foundation. Dr. Brosch is a graduate of the University of Vienna Medical School and completed internships in Vienna and Cleveland, Ohio. He trained in anesthesiology both in Cleveland and at the University of Washington Hospital in Seattle. In 1968 he joined the UA School of Medicine faculty after serving on the faculties of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, the University of Kiel in Germany and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. At UA he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974 and Professor in 1978. Dr. Brosch served as Director of Resident Education for this department for 12 years and as Program Director of the department’s Annual Review Course in Anesthesiology for 25 years. He was President of the Alabama State Society of Anesthesiologists in 1985 and 1986 and founding Editor of its newsletter, which he edited for 14 years. In addition he found time to volunteer his services as Director of Anesthesia aboard the fabled hospital ship SS Hope in the underserved area around Natal in Rio Grande de Norte, Brazil, in February, March and April of 1972.  The University of Alabama Board of Trustees passed a resolution on September 18, 1998, recognizing Dr. Brosch’s years of service and achievement.  We thank Dr. Brosch for his memories of early anesthesia residency training in Birmingham.

HISTORY SECTION NAMED FOR DR. CHESTNUT

At the farewell reception for Dr. Chestnut on May 20, Dr. Maurice Albin announced that our department's History Section in the Education Division has been officially named the David Hill Chestnut, M.D., Section on the History of Anesthesia. Created in June, 2002, the mission of the Section is to expose anesthesiology residents, fellows, faculty, medical students and the general public to the historical developments behind the progress of anesthesiology as a specialty; to enable our residents, fellows, and faculty to participate in more advanced studies concerning anesthesia history; and to develop ties with scholars in historical research at UAB and elsewhere. The Section was the first such academic unit in the world. The Section was named after Dr. Chestnut to honor his support of anesthesia history activities during his eleven years as Chair and especially to recognize his important role in the creation of the Section. -A.J. Wright, M.L.S., Director, History Section [Tuesday Report July 5, 2005]

DEPARTMENT'S HISTORY SECTION: A FIRST-YEAR PROGRESS REPORT

In June, 2002, our department created a History of Anesthesia Section in its Education Division; a review of the year's activities seems in order. Last September our first Visiting Professor with a history focus, Donald Caton, M.D., presented two AGR lectures. During the year several other AGR lectures by our faculty and others focused on history.

Last summer CA-1 residents received a booklet of some classic articles on the early days of general anesthesia prepared by Section faculty member Maurice Albin, M.D.; incoming CA-1s will also receive the booklet. This summer CA-2s will get a similar booklet on regional anesthesia prepared by Section faculty Mark Mandabach, M.D. Dr. Mandabach also presented a paper at the recent annual spring meeting of the Anesthesia History Association.

This past March the Section co-sponsored an invited speaker, William Hammonds, M.D., of the University of Iowa, for a Doctor's Day celebration and a major anesthesia history exhibit at the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences. In April a history-focused journal club was held at the Museum and the Reynolds Historical Library. A rotating history exhibit is always available on the display board outside the departmental library.

Currently, three residents are in various stages of their CA-3 academic projects on history: Jason McKeown, M.D., Travis Slade, M.D., and George Swanson., M.D. Dr. Swanson has already presented some of his material in March at the Gulf Atlantic Anesthesia Residents' Research Conference.

The 2003-4 academic year will feature more activities related to history. Two regular AGR lectures, including one by Dr. Mandabach, will have a history focus. The history Visiting Professor is Douglas Bacon, M.D., from the Mayo Clinic, who will visit us in February 2004. Dr. Bacon is a widely-published scholar who has built his academic career in anesthesia history. Journal clubs in fall 2003 and spring 2004 will feature historical topics.

All of these activities and accomplishments bode well for the future of our History Section! Another event to keep in mind is the 12th annual spring meeting of the Anesthesia History Association, which will be held in Birmingham in April 2005. I hope to see many of you participating!

Finally, I would like to say thanks to David H. Chestnut, M.D., and Jeff Andrews, M.D., who have been very supportive of this Section. --A.J. Wright, M.L.S., Director, HOA Section

UAB Anesthesia Creates History of Anesthesia Section [June 27, 2002]

David Chestnut, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, is pleased to announce the formation of the History of Anesthesiology Section within the department's Education Division. This Section will be directed by A.J. Wright, M.L.S., Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, and assisted by Maurice S. Albin, M.D., M.Sc. (Anes), Professor, and Mark A. Mandabach, M.D., Assistant Professor.

The mission of this Section includes several goals. The first is to expose anesthesiology residents, fellows, faculty, medical students, and the general public to the historical developments behind the progress in anesthesiology. A second goal is to enable our residents, fellows, and faculty to participate in more advanced studies concerning anesthesia history. Finally, the Section plans to develop ties with scholars in the humanities to gain other perspectives in historical research.

These goals will be accomplished through lectures, exhibits, research in local and other archives and libraries, and publications. One of the first projects planned by Section members is to develop a basic History of Anesthesia reading list of primary and secondary materials designed for use by residents and any other interested parties. A combination of lectures and exhibits in March 2003 in conjunction with Doctor's Day is also being planned.
